Bridge washed away by floodwaters due to Ngwan dam breach, thousands affected by flood

Severe flooding is occurring in Lemyar Township, Ayeyarwaddy Region, due to the breach of the Ngwan dam. It has been reported that a concrete bridge on the Lemyar-Ngo Sin Chaung road was washed away by the floodwaters. The damaged and washed-away bridge is located on the Lemyar-Ngo Sin Chaung road near Lathema (Karen) village in Lemyar Township, between mile posts 6 miles 3 furlongs and 6 miles 4 furlongs. The bridge measures 15 feet in length and 12 feet in width. The water that has seeped from the dam breach is currently flowing further into the farmlands in the villages of Kyauk Kyar Kwin and Htain Taw Gyi. According to Dr. Khai Khai Soe, spokesperson for the interim government's presidential office, as of August 3rd, the Ngwan dam breach has affected approximately 14,056 people, comprising 3,158 households in 3,215 families, across five wards and 14 villages in Lemyar Township. Currently, nine flood relief camps have been opened in Lemyar Township for the flood-affected residents. It has been reported that 441 households, totaling 1,411 people, are taking shelter in these relief camps.
