Vietnam, Russia Leaders Eye New Cooperation Mechanisms to Boost Trade

Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustino have agreed to study the establishment of new cooperation mechanisms and specialized working groups to strengthen bilateral trade. During their talks, both leaders also pledged to encourage businesses from their respective countries to expand their operations in each other's markets, aiming to further deepen economic ties. Under its one-party system, Vietnam pursues a socialist-oriented market economy, with strengthening ties with Russia being a key pillar in its efforts to maintain and diversify economic growth. In the context of ongoing geopolitical shifts, cooperation in areas such as energy, defense, and culture holds strategic importance for Vietnam's foreign policy. Prior to this meeting, Moscow also saw the launch of the "Vietnam-Russia Heritage and Cultural Connectivity Space" and initiatives to bolster parliamentary cooperation, indicating efforts to build relationships not only in the economic sphere but also through cultural and people-to-people exchanges. These are essential for fostering mutual understanding between the two nations and building long-term friendly relations. By enhancing its relationship with Russia, Vietnam aims to strike a diplomatic balance and maximize its national interests, while managing its complex relationship with China. Strengthening economic cooperation with Russia is also seen as beneficial for Vietnam in reducing economic dependence on any single country and diversifying its supply chains.
