Senators react to Duterte's first in-person ICC appearance

Mixed reactions have emerged from the Philippines following the first in-person appearance of former President Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Senators, in particular, have voiced sentiments ranging from sympathy to the belief that history should be the ultimate judge. Senator JV Ejercito stated that he felt "sadness" upon seeing Duterte, whom he described as "very frail and emaciated." When asked about the reactions of victims' families from the drug war, the senator remarked, "Let justice take its course. History will be the final judge. We are not God to pass judgment." Senator Bong Go, a long-time aide of Duterte, posted a photo of the former president on social media, referring to him affectionately as "Tatay Digong." Senator Robin Padilla, an ally of Duterte, expressed happiness at seeing the former president but also sadness contemplating his situation in detention. "I know Tatay Digong is strong-willed, but his 81-year-old body can no longer endure prison life," Padilla said. Conversely, Senator Rodante Marcoleta commented that he was "happy" to see Duterte in "good condition." Unlike previous hearings, Duterte did not waive his appearance this time. The presiding judge noted that he could leave the court if he wished. Duterte was arrested in The Hague on March 12, 2025, and last appeared before the ICC via video link on March 14, 2025. His current appearance is part of preparations for his trial, scheduled to commence on November 30.
