South Korea Supports Da Nang's Coconut Planting Project Against Coastal Erosion

Da Nang City in central Vietnam has launched a coconut tree planting project to combat coastal erosion, supported by Hamyang County in South Korea's Gyeongsangnam-do Province. The initiative addresses the challenges of rising sea levels and tidal surges impacting the city's coastline. According to Mr. Ho Quang Buu, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee, the city is grappling with tidal surges and rising sea levels, leading to erosion in several coastal areas. The coconut planting project is seen as a practical measure to strengthen green cover, stabilize sandy beaches, mitigate the impact of sea winds, and improve the ecological landscape. Mr. Buu stated that the donated coconut trees hold not only environmental value but also serve as a vibrant symbol of friendship, trust, and the growing cooperative relationship between the two localities. He urged relevant departments to coordinate closely in planting, nurturing, and managing the trees to ensure their healthy growth. Da Nang has been implementing various measures to tackle coastal erosion and the effects of climate change. Previously, on December 21, 2024, the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourist Beaches planted over 300 coconut trees at Man Thai Beach in Son Tra district, as part of a plan to plant 3,500 coconut trees along tourist beaches. The city has also initiated a social mobilization program, calling for contributions from organizations, businesses, and citizens. In just one month, nearly 700 coconut trees have been received. This campaign aims to complete the planting of 3,497 coconut trees by the end of the third quarter of 2025. The main planting areas are along the coastal routes of Hoang Sa - Vo Nguyen Giap - Truong Sa (spanning Son Tra, An Hai, and Ngu Hanh Son districts) and Nguyen Tat Thanh street (covering Thanh Khe, Hoa Khanh, and Lien Chieu districts). Mr. Nguyen Duc Vu, Head of the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourist Beaches, remarked, "Planting coconut trees will create a more beautiful coastal landscape, add more greenery, and contribute to forming a vibrant and attractive scenery. This will help mitigate the impacts of climate change and limit coastal encroachment and erosion."
