48 Chinese Vessels Monitored in West Philippine Sea in July, Says AFP

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced Tuesday that a total of 48 Chinese vessels were monitored in several West Philippine Sea (WPS) features during July 2026. AFP spokesperson for the WPS, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, stated that People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels were observed in WPS features from July 1 to 31. Trinidad emphasized that "these figures underscore the continued conduct of [illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive] activities that undermine the rules-based international order and challenge the Philippines’ sovereign rights and jurisdiction within its maritime domain." He added, "Such actions contribute to regional tensions and highlight the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to international law." Tensions persist as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a vital waterway for over $3 trillion in annual shipborne commerce, including areas also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. The Philippine government has renamed parts of the South China Sea within its territory as the West Philippine Sea to reinforce its claims. The West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime areas west of the Philippine archipelago, encompassing the Luzon Sea and the waters around, within, and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo de Masinloc. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, stating that China's claims had "no legal basis." China, however, has refused to recognize this decision. "Despite these developments, the Philippine Navy and the Armed Forces of the Philippines remain steadfast in fulfilling their mandate to safeguard the nation's maritime interests," Trinidad stated. He concluded, "Through sustained operational presence, enhanced maritime domain awareness, strengthened inter-agency coordination, and continued capability development, the AFP remains committed to protecting national sovereignty, upholding maritime security, and promoting peace, stability, and the rule of law in the West Philippine Sea."
