Da Nang Aims to Enhance Value of Ngoc Linh Ginseng with International Conference

Da Nang City in central Vietnam hosted a scientific conference aimed at enhancing the international value and global competitiveness of the precious Ngoc Linh ginseng. The conference, titled 'Ngoc Linh Ginseng and International Medicinal Materials,' held on August 2nd, attracted over 200 domestic and international delegates. Da Nang is recognized as one of the regions with the largest natural distribution and cultivation area for Ngoc Linh ginseng in Vietnam, currently covering approximately 1,500 hectares. The city's unique ecosystem and special-use forest system provide a foundation for numerous research institutes and businesses involved in the research, production, and processing of medicinal materials. The government continues to invest in science and technology to support these efforts. These foundations create favorable conditions for Da Nang to develop a national-scale center for research, conservation, development, and processing of medicinal materials. In the past, the conservation and development of Ngoc Linh ginseng and other medicinal materials have received close attention and guidance from the government. Notably, the Prime Minister's Decision No. 611/QD-TTg dated June 1, 2023, approved the Program for Vietnam Ginseng Development until 2030, with a vision towards 2045, in Quang Nam province (now Da Nang City). Furthermore, Decision No. 463/QD-TTg dated February 28, 2025, approved the project 'Development and Formation of a Medicinal Material Industry Cluster in Quang Nam (now Da Nang City) with Ngoc Linh Ginseng as the Key Product.' Speaking at the opening of the conference, Mr. Ho Quang Buu, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee, stated that based on the government's important orientations, the city has proactively proposed and issued many programs, projects, mechanisms, and policies suitable for conserving and developing cultivation areas, and boosting the production of Ngoc Linh ginseng and other potential medicinal materials within the city. The city actively collaborates with the Ministry of Science and Technology to implement numerous national and city-level scientific and technological tasks, focusing on gene conservation, propagation, processing, product development, and intellectual property protection. However, the development of Ngoc Linh ginseng and medicinal materials still faces considerable challenges. These include production scale not matching potential, limited value chain linkages, underdeveloped deep processing technology, and significant challenges in protecting medicinal material resources. To develop the raw material area linked with the medicinal material processing industry in Da Nang, especially for Ngoc Linh ginseng, Mr. Buu requested participants to focus on discussing and comprehensively evaluating the current situation, potential, challenges, mechanisms, policies, and research results concerning Ngoc Linh ginseng and medicinal materials. He also urged them to share experiences and propose solutions for developing raw material areas, deep processing, export orientation, and effective implementation of related projects. He emphasized the need to strengthen the collaboration between the State, scientists, and businesses, expand international cooperation, form a value chain from research to production, processing, and commercialization, boost investment promotion, facilitate technology transfer, expand markets, and fully leverage the city's medicinal material potential and advantages. During the conference, experts will share practical experiences in building ginseng industry value chains, standardizing quality, developing raw material areas, perfecting policies to support businesses, building national brands, and expanding export markets. These shared insights will serve as crucial references, contributing to guiding the development of Vietnam's Ngoc Linh ginseng towards international integration, enhancing added value, and improving competitiveness in the global market.
