India Floods and Landslides Kill Over 100 Amid Heavy Rains

Record heavy rainfall across various parts of India has led to floods and landslides, claiming the lives of over 100 people since early July, according to official statistics released on August 5. Thousands have been forced to evacuate. The northeastern state of Assam appears to be the hardest hit, with the Chief Minister stating that at least 87 people have died in his state. The Sivsagar region alone has seen at least 47 fatalities, and many areas remain submerged. Local authorities have appealed to the public for donations to aid rescue and rehabilitation efforts. "The devastation is the most severe that these regions have never experienced before," the Chief Minister remarked on social media platform X. Images show rescue workers assisting residents to higher ground via rubber boats amidst the floodwaters. In the southern state of Kerala, reports from August 4 indicated at least 15 deaths and 7 people missing. More than 10,000 people in this state have been relocated to various relief centers, as heavy rains continue to cause landslides and flooding. Flash floods in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have resulted in at least 31 deaths. In the northeastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand, at least 22 people have died due to lightning strikes since August 4. Among the deceased, predominantly farmers and livestock herders, are also four children. These disasters highlight the intensifying extreme weather events attributed to climate change, warranting close observation for potential impacts on neighboring regions, including Cambodia.
