Kampong Cham Authorities Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Fishing to Protect Fisheries Resources
Kampong Cham, Cambodia – Authorities in Kampong Cham province are intensifying crackdowns on illegal fishing activities during the closed season, a critical period for fish reproduction. Specialized units are collaborating with local administrations to remove and confiscate illegal fishing gear, aiming to protect vital fisheries resources.
Kampong Cham, Cambodia – To safeguard the nation's vital fisheries resources and ensure the reproduction of fish species, Kampong Cham province has intensified its crackdown on illegal fishing activities during the closed season. Under the strict directives of His Excellency Un Chantha, Governor of Kampong Cham Province and Head of the Provincial Unity Command, specialized forces from the Kampong Cham Department of Fisheries Administration have been collaborating with local authorities and relevant agencies to rigorously monitor and suppress illegal fishing within their jurisdiction. On July 2nd, specialized forces from the Kampong Cham Department of Fisheries Administration, in cooperation with the Mekong River Fisheries Administration Inspectorate, the administrations of Kampong Siem and Kong Meas districts, and fishing communities, conducted an operation to inspect and suppress illegal fishing activities. This operation was facilitated by the Prosecutor General of the Kampong Cham Provincial Court. During this operation, three cases of illegal fishing were uncovered: two in Kampong Siem district and one in Kong Meas district. Illegal fishing gear, including 18 mosquito nets, 420 meters of mosquito net fencing, and 350 stakes, were dismantled and destroyed on-site. Additionally, a quantity of mixed-species fry was released back into the river. To ensure the growth of fish populations in the natural lakes within the fishing areas managed by the Kampong Department of Fisheries Administration, constant collaboration with local authorities at all levels is maintained for inspection and suppression of illegal activities along rivers, lakes, and canals across the districts. Local authorities are urged to educate and disseminate information to residents and fishing communities, encouraging them to collectively prevent all forms of illegal fishing and to refrain from using prohibited illegal gear.
