Thailand Considers Adding Local Parts Condition to EV 3.5 Policy, Discusses with Tesla

The Thai government is considering introducing new conditions to its 'EV 3.5' policy, aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Specifically, the plan is to link the use of parts manufactured within Thailand to incentives for EV buyers. This aims to strengthen the EV parts supply chain within Thailand's automotive industry and foster related industries. Regarding this policy change, Deputy Minister Siripong revealed that during discussions with Tesla, a major EV manufacturer, it was indicated that the annual import value of tires and batteries from Thailand is expected to reach billions of baht. This suggests that Thailand already plays a role as a supplier of EV parts, and it is considered a strategic move towards further improving domestic production capacity and enhancing international competitiveness. The EV 3.5 policy has so far supported domestic EV adoption through subsidies for EV purchases. The addition of this new condition is seen not just as a measure for further adoption but as a strategic step to establish Thailand as a key EV production hub in Southeast Asia. For domestic parts manufacturers, this will create new business opportunities, while also requiring them to meet international quality standards and invest in technological innovation.
