Mother of young basketball star, 40 days after drowning death, appeals for truth and justice
Forty days after the drowning death of promising young basketball player Rene Clert Baterbonia, his mother, along with family, friends, and supporters, held a memorial mass appealing for truth and justice. The event drew a large crowd, mourning the athlete's untimely demise and remembering his legacy.
TALACOGON, Agusan del Sur — Tears flowed freely as Rovelyn Baterbonia, mother of promising basketball standout Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, called for prayers and justice on the 40th day since her son’s tragic death in a drowning incident in Aurora province. Family, friends, and supporters gathered for a memorial Mass, their chants of “Hustisya!” echoing the family’s plea for accountability. “If you can open our hearts, there is a big wound that can never be healed,” Rovelyn Baterbonia said, her voice thick with emotion, as she spoke of the profound pain left by the loss of her 18-year-old son, whose burgeoning basketball career was cut short. An estimated 3,000 people from various parts of Mindanao attended the kwarenta dias memorial celebration, filling the Labnig Municipal Cemetery to honor Baterbonia’s life and legacy. Many expressed surprise at the large turnout, a testament to the young athlete’s impact. Floral tributes, including bougainvillea and bonsai plants, arrived from across the Philippines and even from Spain, signifying the widespread grief. The local government of Talacogon prepared for three days to ensure the orderly conduct of the memorial gathering. Father Rances Oñes, chancellor of the Diocese of Butuan, described the 40th day memorial as a significant spiritual milestone, symbolizing preparation, transition, and hope. He referenced biblical accounts of the number 40, likening the occasion to a “loving send-off” and a reminder of unending hope. He also created an acronym from Rene’s name, highlighting his resilience, empathy, genuineness, and exemplary nature. Baterbonia, a native of Talacogon, was a former standout player for Ateneo de Davao University and had recently joined the Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball program. He was among the Ateneo team members who died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. Nigerian player Divine Adili also perished in the incident. Authorities reported that post-mortem examinations indicated both athletes died from asphyxia due to drowning, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the event, including safety protocols. Baterbonia’s death has deeply affected Agusan del Sur, where he was considered one of the province’s brightest basketball talents. He had led the Davao Region boys’ basketball team to the championship in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, earning the Most Valuable Player award. For his family, his death represents an unfinished dream, a career with the Ateneo Blue Eagles just beginning when his life was tragically cut short. They continue to seek prayers as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two young athletes. Source: Inquirer NewsInfo
