IPSJ holds workshop on drafting constitution for Ayeyarwady Federal Unit

(IPSJ) Mizzima. – The Institute for Peace and Social Justice (IPSJ) held a workshop on drafting the constitution for the Ayeyarwady Federal Unit at a location on the Thai-Myanmar border, focusing on the creation of a state-level constitution for a future federal democratic system, IPSJ announced. Forty-one members of the Ayeyarwady Interim Measures Drafting Committee attended the workshop, which also included representatives from the Magway, Sagaing, and Mandalay Federal Units, and experiences and lessons were exchanged between the units, it was learned. Dr. Thaung Htun, Executive Director of IPSJ, said that this workshop is an important milestone for building a united federal democratic union and will help foster cooperation between federal units and build inclusive state-level institutions. On the first day of the workshop, the 'Handbook for Transparent Legislation' written by U Chan Myae was introduced and distributed, and IPSJ stated that this book will be a useful reference for interim constitution drafting committees. During the workshop, issues such as reviewing the draft Ayeyarwady Interim Measures, the structure of state parliaments and governments, local governance and autonomy, the state-level judicial system, fiscal federalism, and natural resource management were discussed. On the final day, the remaining stages of the constitution drafting process for the Ayeyarwady Federal Unit and the plans for continued support from IPSJ were discussed, it was learned.
