South Sulawesi Implements Odd-Even Fuel Subsidies to Ease Queues

MAKASSAR - The South Sulawesi Provincial Government is implementing an odd-even system for filling subsidized fuel at all gas stations from September 13 to 20, 2026. This policy was taken to break down the long queues that occurred in recent days. The rules are contained in the letter of the South Sulawesi Energy and Mineral Resources Office Number 670/2478/DESDM dated September 12, 2026 regarding Handling Long Lines of Fuel at SPBU in the South Sulawesi Region. The Acting Head of the South Sulawesi ESDM Office, Kasman, said that the filling of subsidized fuel would be adjusted to the latest number plate of the vehicle. "The implementation of the odd-even system for filling subsidized fuel to break the queue. The filling system is based on odd-even vehicle license plates at all SPBU in South Sulawesi," Kasman said in the letter, quoted from Antara, Sunday, September 13. On odd dates, vehicles with license plates ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 are allowed to fill up with subsidized fuel. Meanwhile, on even dates, the turn is for vehicles ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. The South Sulawesi Provincial Government also rearranged the schedule for filling trucks. Heavy vehicles are directed to fill fuel at night to reduce congestion at gas stations during the day. In addition, private vehicles are only allowed to fill subsidized fuel if the fuel indicator is left one bar or less. "Private vehicles are only allowed to refuel subsidized fuel if the fuel indicator on the odometer shows 1 bar down to prevent panic buying and repeated refueling," the letter reads. This odd-even policy is valid until September 20, 2026 and is applied at all SPBU in South Sulawesi.
