Thai Police Investigate Third-Party Links in Temple Fund Misappropriation Case

BANGKOK — 12 September 2026, Police are investigating possible third-party links in a case involving former monk Atichot Thamwaro, also known as former abbot Luang Por Choti, and a woman identified as “Ae”, with investigators examining financial transactions worth more than 215 million baht. Pol. Maj. Gen. Phatthanasak Bupphasuwann, commander of the Crime Suppression Division, said on 12 September that investigators were collecting evidence and conducting the probe in two areas. The first concerns allegations that the former monk, 66, who was formerly abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, diverted temple funds into his personal bank account while issuing donation acknowledgement certificates in the temple’s name. The second focuses on tracing money linked to possible accomplices. Investigators have found financial records involving donation certificates, certificates related to the issuance of amulets, and donations for temple renovations, with the transactions collectively exceeding 215 million baht. Pol. Maj. Gen. Phatthanasak said investigators believe one or two third parties may be involved in the case. It has not yet been established whether the suspected third parties are laywomen or monks, as investigators are still gathering evidence. The Crime Suppression Division has also forwarded relevant documents to the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) for further examination. Investigators are now tracing the flow of funds to identify possible links between the alleged financial misconduct and other individuals who may face legal action. Pol. Maj. Gen. Phatthanasak said no specific timeframe had been set for completing the investigation, but authorities would work to conclude it as quickly as possible and provide a further update.
