PM Hun Manet Commemorates 17th Anniversary of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum's UNESCO Memory of the World Inscription

Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia on the morning of July 31st posted a message commemorating the 17th anniversary of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum's archives being inscribed onto UNESCO's Memory of the World Register (July 31, 2009 ~ July 31, 2026). The archives of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum were officially inscribed onto the Memory of the World Register by the International Advisory Committee of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme on July 31, 2009, in Brijtown, Barbados. The archives of the Tuol Sleng Museum are the most important evidence showing the crimes that occurred during the Khmer Rouge era. The museum has received considerable support from the international community, both technically and financially, especially from KOICA through the facilitation of UNESCO in preserving and duplicating these documents, as well as providing ease for relatives of victims to search for information and use the documents via the internet. It should be noted that the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) is one of the three memorial sites in Cambodia that have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "Cambodia's Heritage of Peace: From Crime Scene to Reconciliation and Peace Center." This inscription was made through decision 47 COM 8B.14 during the 47th session on July 11, 2025, in Paris, France. The three crime sites of the Pol Pot genocidal regime, namely the former M-13 detention center (located on the border of Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Speu provinces), the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), and the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center (located in Phnom Penh capital), have been inscribed as "Cambodia's Heritage of Peace: From Crime Scene to Reconciliation and Peace Center" on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
