Cambodia Emphasizes Nutrition and Food Security for Healthier Communities
A campaign titled 'Sufficient Nutrition, Sufficient Food Starts from Your Home' was held in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province. Residents were educated on the importance of selecting, preparing, and cooking safe, nutritious food, with a focus on strengthening support for displaced populations.
In northwestern Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province, a campaign under the slogan 'Sufficient Nutrition, Sufficient Food Starts from Your Home' is underway to promote the health of local residents. The initiative aims to deepen the public's understanding of the importance of selecting, preparing, and cooking safe and nutritious food. Hil Raya, Deputy Governor of Banteay Meanchey, representing Governor Um Ratry, emphasized the broad dissemination of this message at a campaign and community cooking demonstration event held on September 1, 2026, in the Srom Chong Tea village area (a displaced persons' settlement) in Sla Kram commune, Svay Chek district. This area is home to many residents displaced from their original homes. During the event, attended by a large number of community members, Hil Raya highlighted the significance of prioritizing family nutrition. He stated that quality, nutrient-rich food not only contributes to good health but also strengthens the resilience of children, women, the elderly, and the entire family. He pointed out that since the family is where members eat regularly, nutritional awareness should begin at the household level. Therefore, preparing meals with consideration for diversity, quality, hygiene, and safety is crucial for reducing malnutrition and protecting public health. Concurrently, Hil Raya expressed gratitude to World Vision International Cambodia for their participation and collaboration with the government and local authorities in organizing the 'Sufficient Nutrition, Sufficient Food' campaign and the practical cooking demonstrations. He recognized the valuable contribution of this partner organization in disseminating knowledge and enhancing the understanding of citizens, particularly those in a displaced situation, regarding health care through adequate nutrition. The Deputy Governor stressed that in situations where some citizens are forced to relocate or are displaced, ensuring sufficient and quality food is a matter requiring special attention. Beyond food supply, he noted that educating on efficient food utilization, maintaining hygiene, and proper cooking methods are equally indispensable aspects. Through community cooking demonstration activities, residents have the opportunity to gain practical knowledge beyond theoretical instruction. This also enables them to apply the acquired knowledge in their daily lives and share it with family members and others in the community. The event also showcased the attention given by provincial authorities and development partners to the well-being of the people, focusing on the principle that adequate food must go hand-in-hand with nutritious and safe food. In other words, addressing nutritional issues should not solely focus on the quantity of food but also consider its quality and diversity. Furthermore, the message 'Sufficient Nutrition, Sufficient Food Starts from Your Home' encourages each family to recognize that maintaining health is not solely the responsibility of health institutions or authorities but a collective effort of all family members through proper and hygienic food selection and preparation. The strong participation of citizens in this campaign reflects that nutritional education disseminated through practical local activities is an effective means of reaching the public and fostering changes in healthy lifestyle habits. In summary, the 'Sufficient Nutrition, Sufficient Food' campaign is not just a one-time cooking demonstration but a meaningful message to families and communities that building good health begins with the food we choose and prepare every day. Especially for citizens facing hardships, the combination of food support and nutritional knowledge will be increasingly important in ensuring their well-being and that of their families.
