Photonics Giant Coherent Eyes Expansion in Philippine Manufacturing

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) announced that Coherent II-VI Laser Enterprise Phils., Inc., a major player in the photonics sector, is considering expanding its manufacturing operations in the Philippines. According to PEZA, Coherent's plan aims to "strengthen the Philippines’ role in the global supply chain for photonics, optical communications, advanced materials, and semiconductor-related technologies." The company has already invested approximately P1.7 billion in its Philippine operations as a PEZA locator since 2014. Coherent operates production facilities in Calamba, Laguna, and Rosario, Cavite, specializing in the manufacturing of photonics, precision materials, semiconductor laser technologies, and other optoelectronic products. It plays a significant role in optical technologies for high-speed connectivity and AI-driven data centers, including optical transceivers, semiconductor lasers, and related components. PEZA stated that during a meeting, Coherent presented "prospects for further scaling its Philippine operations, supported by technology transfer from its global network and expanded advanced manufacturing capabilities." Given the current global demand for high-speed and efficient optical connectivity driven by AI and data center expansion, PEZA anticipates that Coherent's expansion could help the Philippines attract investment in higher-value technology manufacturing. Coherent maintains manufacturing, research and development, sales, service, and distribution operations in over 20 countries. Its portfolio includes lasers, optical and optoelectronic components, transceivers, modules, systems, and engineered materials for applications in data centers, communications, semiconductors, industrial manufacturing, electronics, and instrumentation.
