Vietnam, AFD Sign $48.6 Million in Financial Cooperation Deals

The Ministry of Finance of Vietnam and the French Development Agency (AFD) have exchanged documents for financial cooperation deals worth US$48.6 million. This cooperation aims to improve the management and efficient use of water resources and strengthen climate change adaptation in Vietnam. A specific AFD-funded project in Dien Bien province will focus on enhancing water resource management between river basins, thereby securing water supplies for production and daily life. This initiative seeks to improve resilience against drought, erosion, flooding, and climate change. AFD has been a consistent supporter of Vietnam's development, contributing to infrastructure projects and environmental conservation. Previous engagements include fast-tracking a climate resilience project in Lang Son province and providing a loan for Vietnam's first pumped-storage hydropower plant. An AFD official highlighted the crucial role of development partners in achieving Vietnam's progress and future goals. Vietnam, despite its strong economic growth under a one-party system, remains vulnerable to climate change impacts. Regions like the Mekong Delta face risks from sea-level rise and salinity. International development cooperation is therefore vital for Vietnam to maintain its sustainable growth trajectory and ensure the stability of its citizens' livelihoods. In its foreign policy, particularly concerning its relationship with China, Vietnam seeks to diversify its partnerships, and strengthened ties with European nations like France are noteworthy in this context.
