Six Lieutenant Colonels, Nine Majors, Four Captains, Total 19 Officers Transferred and Appointed to Myanmar Space Agency

Six Lieutenant Colonels, nine Majors, and four Captains, totaling 19 officers from the Ministry of Defence, have been transferred and appointed to the Myanmar Space Agency, according to the Myanmar National Gazette published on August 28. Based on the approval of the Federal Government Meeting (3/2026) held on May 26, 2026, an order (3/2026) was issued by the Office of the President on June 3, 2026, stating that 19 officers from the Ministry of Defence have been appointed to the vacant positions and departments of the Myanmar Space Agency (Myanmar Space Agency) starting from their date of duty. In this transfer and appointment to the Myanmar Space Agency, three of the six Lieutenant Colonels were appointed as Deputy Directors-General, and the remaining four were appointed as Directors (Heads of Department). In addition, eight of the nine Majors were appointed as Deputy Directors (Heads of Division), and the remaining one Major and four Captains were appointed as Assistant Directors. The Chief Executive Officer of the Myanmar Space Agency (Myanmar Space Agency-MSA) is Dr. Soe Myint Maung, and the agency was established on June 1, 2025, during the State Administration Council government. The agency was formed to implement, under the direct supervision of the Head of State, the cooperation with international organizations in the field of space exploration and utilization for peaceful purposes, to contribute to national security, environmental and natural resource conservation, agriculture, disaster management and response, and the socio-economic development of the public through space technology, and to develop space science and technology and nurture future young scientists. The mandate and duties of the Myanmar Space Agency (Myanmar Space Agency-MSA) include freely managing and implementing, in accordance with the existing laws of the state, matters related to communication, signing, and contracting of understanding letters, agreements, and treaties concerning the peaceful use of outer space and the monitoring of space debris, as well as other space science and technology-related issues, and freely cooperating with international organizations, universities, companies, and individuals on space science and technology-related matters. It also includes representing Myanmar at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and other similar space forums, meetings, and organizations; drafting, submitting, and implementing national space policies, strategic plans, and legal procedures; submitting annual reports on international space activities; and creating research and educational programs and resources in collaboration with domestic and foreign universities and organizations for the development of space science and technology and the nurturing of future young scientists. Furthermore, it includes educating and supporting the public, including students, about Earth science and space science and technology, and building human resources; scrutinizing and selecting professionals with good morale and discipline for appointment to the Myanmar Space Agency and submitting them to the Head of State for approval; overseeing and coordinating the launch, control, and operation of state-owned and private satellites; approving, implementing, and supervising civil space science and technology research programs and projects; facilitating and cooperating on investment matters in space science and technology from government, private, and external organizations; contributing to national security, environmental and natural resource conservation, agriculture, disaster management and response, and urban planning through space technology for the socio-economic development of the public; and enhancing the nation's geopolitical importance through the use of space technology. Similarly, the agency's mandate and duties include serving as a center for the collection, distribution, and provision of services for satellite image information; supporting the rapid and effective implementation of agriculture and disaster management and response by integrating Big Data and AI technologies with ERS technology; supporting the development of e-Government systems through space science and technology; analyzing the vast amount of current information to help make better decisions for the benefit of the state; designing and building high-performance computing systems; and creating and using computational software for practical technology research using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
