Junta reinforces strategic town Athok as Ayeyarwady frontlines expand

Burma News International (BNI) is a network of 15 independent media and news organizations based in and around Burma As fighting in Arakan (Rakhine) State spills over into neighboring Ayeyarwady Region and the Arakan Army (AA) expands its areas of operation, the junta has reinforced defensive positions in Athok, a strategically important town in Ayeyarwady Region's Yekyi Township critical to both military operations and logistics, according to locals. Athok sits along the key Pathein–Monywa Road, a major transportation corridor that also provides road access to Gwa Township in southern Arakan State. The town is further connected by road, waterway, and railway to Pathein, the capital of Ayeyarwady Region and headquarters of the junta's Southwest Region Military Command, making it a critical logistical and military junction for both troop movements and commercial transportation. Currently, large numbers of junta troops are stationed at Artillery Battalion 344, based in Myauksan Village in Yekyi Township, about 15 miles from Athok, as well as in Satdaunggyi Village near the town. "The Pathein-Monywa Road runs through Athok. The artillery battalion near Yekyi is about 15 miles away from Athok. The AA has been carrying out repeated hit-and-run attacks on that battalion. That's why the junta is reinforcing Athok and preparing defensive positions there. Local people are also worried the regime will begin forcibly conscripting civilians. On the morning of June 26, around 20 junta vehicles left to deploy troops in villages between Yekyi and Athok. From what we've heard, most of those troops are expected to be stationed in Satdaunggyi Village," a local source said. There are also growing assessments that the AA-led resistance coalition could infiltrate villages north of Athok along the Pathein-Monywa Road, including Satdaunggyi, Kwinthonesint, Khanaung, Gonmin, and Hpayargyi. As the fighting edges closer to Ayeyarwady Region, the junta has intensified defensive preparations across Yekyi, Myanaung, Kyangin, Kyonpyaw, and Thabaung townships. In some areas, civilians are reportedly being forced to perform security and guard duties. The junta has also imposed restrictions on transporting food, fuel, and other supplies into border areas adjoining Arakan State in Yekyi, Thabaung, and Lemyethna townships, according to locals. To reinforce the Ayeyarwady-Arakan front, the junta has deployed battalions under Military Operations Command 17 (MOC-17), headquartered in Mong Pan Township in southern Shan State, along with several battalions based in Mon State. However, those units are reportedly struggling with logistical difficulties due to transportation challenges. The junta has also deployed substantial reinforcements to the Ayeyarwady front, including troops from Light Infantry Battalions (LIBs) 4, 5, 6, and 10, Infantry Battalions (IBs) 35 and 80; and IBs 63 and 271 under the Southwest Region Military Command.
