DOJ Ready to Scrutinize Pax Silica Legal Agreements

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is prepared to scrutinize the legal agreements concerning the massive Pax Silica Hub initiative in New Clark City, should the need arise. DOJ Undersecretary Nicholas Ty stated that while the project primarily falls under economic agencies like the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development, the Justice Department may soon become involved. "Obviously considering the magnitude of this project, this endeavor. DOJ will play a role, when the time comes, to look into the agreements as well as the legality of the entire process. If it does get to that point, we’ll be ready," Ty said. He added that while they are not currently investigating any constitutional issues, they are ready to examine the legal and constitutional angles if such matters arise. The Pax Silica Hub, planned as an AI-centered facility in Tarlac, has drawn criticism from numerous green groups over its projected high consumption of energy and water once operational. Some organizations have also alleged that the project threatens to displace farmers and indigenous communities. However, the government has consistently defended the project, reiterating its potential to generate jobs and income. The initiative is being developed as part of the Philippines' partnership with the United States. New Clark City is part of the Clark Economic Zone, which has been emerging as a new economic hub in the Philippines with recent infrastructure developments. The Pax Silica project aims for further development in the region, but discussions regarding its environmental impact and social implications are expected to continue.
