Angkor Equinox Run Attracts Over 10,000, Boosting Cambodia's Heritage Tourism

SIEM REAP, Sept 22, 2026 (KPT) — The "Equinox Angkor Run — Run for Tourism," held in conjunction with the autumnal equinox from Sept 21–23, drew an impressive 10,355 participants, transforming the annual spectacle into a significant platform for showcasing Cambodia's cultural heritage and tourism potential, officials stated on Monday. Tourism Minister Huot Hak presided over the event, accompanied by Deputy Governor Ngov Sengkak, representing Governor Prak Sophoan. The run attracted a diverse crowd, including government officials, domestic and international tourists, young people, local residents, content creators, and sports enthusiasts. Timed to coincide with the equinox phenomenon where the rising sun aligns directly above the central tower of Angkor Wat, the event was strategically designed to promote health, culture, heritage, and hospitality to a global audience. "This run is not only about physical activity but about presenting Cambodia’s civilisation, natural beauty and warmth to the world," Hak remarked. Officials attributed the strong turnout to effective cooperation among the government, local authorities, the private sector, tourism associations, and local communities. Minister Hak urged participants, influencers, and the media to actively share positive stories and images of their equinox experiences. He emphasized the importance of countering fake news and avoiding negative content that could potentially harm Cambodia's international reputation. The campaign aims to amplify Cambodia's tourism appeal by encouraging participants to broadcast their experiences of the equinox, a phenomenon occurring twice annually in March and September. Authorities highlighted that the initiative offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the rare sunrise phenomenon while creating lasting memories at one of the kingdom’s most iconic heritage sites.
