Cambodia Cracks Down on Illegal Gold Mining in Wildlife Sanctuary

Cambodia's Ministry of Environment is intensifying its crackdown on illegal gold mining activities, particularly in the area around Choeung Chi mountain within the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary in Sandan district, Kampong Thom province. In collaboration with local authorities, the ministry has been continuously stopping and cracking down on illegal mining operations. According to the ministry, as of August 2026, authorities had seized and dismantled 25 pumps, 12 pump heads, numerous hoses, and other equipment used in illegal mining. The provincial administration of Kampong Thom has set a one-month period, starting from September 4, 2026, for residents to cease mining, remove equipment, and halt illegal gold mining activities. The provincial government has notified residents to immediately stop illegal mining in the aforementioned area. Furthermore, relevant ministries and local authorities have been instructed to enhance public awareness campaigns for residents and to take legal action against any violations discovered after the provincial government's notification takes effect. Recently, following reports of illegal mining in the area, the Ministry of Environment and local authorities intervened to minimize environmental impact and protect natural resources. Both the ministry and local authorities have also warned of potential legal action against offenders in accordance with the law.
