Malaysian Defense Minister to Visit Cambodia

Malaysia's Minister of Defense, Mohamed Khaled Nordin, will undertake a two-day official visit to Cambodia from August 6-7, 2026. This visit comes approximately one month after the Malaysian Armed Forces Commander, General Malek Razak Sulaiman, concluded his trip to Cambodia. The Royal Gendarmerie disseminated on its Facebook page on August 4, following a security planning meeting, that during his official visit to Cambodia, the Malaysian Minister of Defense will pay courtesy calls to senior leaders of the Cambodian government. According to the same source, the Malaysian Defense Minister will hold an official meeting with his counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense General Tea Seiha, at the Ministry of National Defense headquarters. It is noteworthy that this visit occurs within a nearly one-month timeframe after the Malaysian Armed Forces Commander visited Cambodia from July 8 to 11. During that visit, he met with senior Cambodian leaders, visited Banteay Meanchey province to attend a presentation by the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), and discussed with the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces the acceleration of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the defense sector, expanding cooperation between all types of armed forces, increasing training and joint exercises, information sharing, and cooperating to prevent transnational crime. Cambodia and Malaysia officially established diplomatic relations in 1957, marking 69 years of bilateral ties this year. This relationship has provided mutual benefits in the economic, political, diplomatic, tourism, and cultural sectors. Notably, in 2025, when Cambodia faced an invasion from the Thai side, Malaysia, as the rotating chair of ASEAN, played a significant role in leading negotiations and facilitating a ceasefire agreement in late July and the establishment of an ASEAN Observer Group. Former Malaysian Army Commander Mohd Nizam Jaffar, who retired in January 2026, visited Cambodia twice. The first was a working visit on July 29, 2025, aimed at establishing a temporary ASEAN observer to facilitate the Cambodian-Thai conflict. The second was an official visit organized on December 7, 2025. In October 2025, the Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army visited Malaysia, opening a new chapter in the defense sector. This involved the signing of Terms of Reference (TOR) for cooperation between the Royal Cambodian Army and the Malaysian Army, aimed at strengthening and expanding friendship ties to be closer, long-lasting, and trustworthy, contributing to maintaining regional peace with a focus on mutual exchange, training, joint exercises, and other mutually beneficial areas.
