Cambodia Intensifies Mosquito Eradication Campaign Amid Dengue and Chikungunya Concerns, Emphasizing Citizen Participation

The Provincial Department of Health in Banteay Meanchey Province, northwestern Cambodia, is intensifying mosquito eradication campaigns across its districts to prevent the spread of dengue fever and chikungunya. The provincial health department is collaborating closely with district health offices, health centers, local authorities, and village defense forces to conduct direct insecticide spraying for the elimination of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Despite the vigorous implementation of the mosquito spraying campaign, Dr. Le Chansavath, Director of the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Department of Health, clearly stated on the afternoon of July 30, 2026, that insecticide spraying is merely a "supplementary response measure." He emphasized that the crucial key and the true core measure depend on the active participation of all citizens within the community. Dr. Le Chansavath urgently appealed to all citizens to enhance their vigilance and collectively clean up the environment around their homes. He urged them to regularly eliminate all objects that collect water, which serve as breeding grounds for larvae, such as discarded tires, empty cans, broken containers, and other sources of stagnant water. "Cutting off the source of larvae is cutting off the life cycle of the female Aedes mosquito, in line with the slogan: 'No larvae, no Aedes mosquitoes, and no dengue fever outbreaks in the community,'" stated Dr. Le Chansavath. This highlights the principle of eliminating the breeding grounds to prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
