Laos Destroys 440kg of Illegally Imported Animal Products, Bolstering Food Safety and Border Control

Vientiane, Laos – Authorities in Vientiane have destroyed 440 kilograms of illegally imported animal products at the Dongphosy Animal Quarantine Checkpoint. The action is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen inspections and control the movement of animal products into the Lao PDR, aiming to prevent illegal imports that could pose risks to public health and livestock. The seized items included 240 kilograms of chicken offal, 100 kilograms of sour pork sausage, 80 kilograms of beef omasum, and 20 kilograms of minced chicken meat. These products were detected on September 21 during an inspection at the First Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge International Checkpoint, conducted by veterinary officials in coordination with customs and immigration police. Officials determined that the accompanying import documents were incomplete and did not comply with regulations. The products were subsequently seized and transported for destruction. This incident highlights the challenges faced by Laos in managing its borders, particularly in preventing the inflow of illicit goods that could impact food safety and local industries. While the country, under the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, seeks economic development, robust border controls are crucial.
