Northern Vietnam Braces for Heavy Rainfall, Exceeding 300mm in Some Areas; Mitigation Measures Ordered

Northern and North Central coastal regions of Vietnam are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from August 4-6, with some areas potentially exceeding 300mm. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting announced that rainfall in the northern region and from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh province is predicted to range from 100mm to 200mm, with some locations exceeding 300mm during this period. Rainfall is expected to be concentrated mainly in the late afternoon, at night, and in the early morning. In response to this forecast, relevant authorities have been instructed to proactively implement measures to prepare for the risks of floods and landslides caused by heavy rain. Localities, organizations, and schools are required to develop and execute plans to minimize damage. Vietnam, while undergoing rapid economic growth under its one-party system, is also geographically susceptible to the impacts of natural disasters. In recent years, climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, making infrastructure development and strengthening disaster preparedness urgent priorities. Furthermore, in its relationship with China, strong economic ties coexist with tensions over issues such as the South China Sea, underscoring the necessity of enhancing resilience to natural disasters for domestic stability and development.
