Kompong Thom Authorities Summon Woman Claiming to be 'Neang Baromey'

In Cambodia's Kompong Thom province, authorities have been ordered to summon, educate, and obtain a written pledge from a woman who claims to be 'Neang Baromey' (Holy Mother Baromey). This action reflects the authorities' concern over the spread of unregulated beliefs within the community. Nhouon Phat, Governor of Kompong Thom province, announced on September 21st, in his capacity as head of the Provincial Administration Unified Command, that he had instructed the administration of Santuk district and the Provincial Department of Religious Affairs to summon the woman reportedly calling herself 'Neang Baromey' in the district to create a record, educate her, and have her sign a contract. The governor stated that while traditional ancestral beliefs should not be disrespected, the creation of new beliefs must be reasonable and maintain good social order. He also took the opportunity to appeal to the public, stating that for those who are ill, seeking spiritual solace through beliefs is only supplementary, and actual treatment for illnesses should be sought from professional and scientifically-based medical institutions. This incident highlights the debate in Cambodian society regarding the balance between faith, actual medical treatment, and social order. In rural areas especially, traditional beliefs and folk remedies remain deeply entrenched. However, access to and understanding of modern medicine may not be sufficient in all cases, potentially creating fertile ground for phenomena like the 'Baromey' claims.
