Kampong Thom Military Commander Orders Forces to Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Fishing and Logging
The military commander of Kampong Thom Province, Cambodia, has instructed his subordinate forces to strengthen the crackdown on illegal fishing and logging, in addition to their core duty of defending the nation. He particularly emphasized that eradicating illegal fishing during the closed season is crucial for ensuring the nation's food supply.
Major General Som Son, Commander of the Kampong Thom Provincial Operations Military Zone, has instructed the military forces under his command to strengthen the prevention and suppression of illegal activities related to natural resources, in addition to their core mission of defending the homeland. These activities include illegal fishing and encroachment on forest resources. Speaking at a meeting with officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers of the Operational Military Zone Headquarters on the morning of September 21, 2026, Major General Som Son emphasized the strengthening of the roles and responsibilities of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, assigning them important tasks to participate with relevant specialized authorities in preventing, blocking, and suppressing illegal natural resource activities. He stressed that the forces of the Kampong Thom Provincial Operations Military Zone must be determined to prevent, block, and suppress illegal natural resource activities absolutely. In particular, he called for attention to the crackdown on illegal fishing, which is occurring despite being within the closed fishing season. Participation in suppressing illegal fishing aims to restore fish stocks to meet the needs of Cambodian citizens nationwide. The military commander also advised on the protection of forest resources, instructing that forest encroachment for the purpose of seizing state land as private property must be absolutely prevented and suppressed. Regarding land that has been reclaimed as state property following past suppression operations, he instructed that it must be protected and not lost again, to allow for forest restoration and the regrowth of natural forests. Meanwhile, concerning the core mission of national defense, Major General Som Son briefed on the latest developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border and instructed all soldiers to be constantly prepared to carry out the mission of defending territorial integrity when ordered by the leadership.
