Transition to modern agricultural system needed for food security

For domestic food security and export promotion, it is necessary to transition from the current traditional agricultural production to an efficient and modern commercial agricultural system, expand cultivation, and actually cultivate, stated President Min Aung Hlaing. This was emphasized by the President in his opening remarks at the "From Agricultural Sector Development to National Export Growth" national-level workshop held on the morning of September 21 at the Myanmar International Convention Centre (MICC-1) in Nay Pyi Taw. The rise in commodity prices is partly due to the imbalance between production and consumption, increased production costs, and high transportation and miscellaneous expenses. To overcome these situations, it is necessary to promote the production of agricultural products, ensure sufficient domestic food supply, and reduce commodity prices to a level affordable for the general public, he said. Agricultural products hold an important position among Myanmar's main exports, with exports amounting to 4.741 billion US dollars in the 2024-2025 fiscal year and 3.743 billion dollars in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, according to President Min Aung Hlaing. Furthermore, to successfully implement commercial agriculture, it is necessary to adequately fulfill the elements of "seed, land, water, and technology," and emphasis must be placed on securing high-quality, superior seeds, efficient land utilization, systematic use of water resources, and the adoption of scientific cultivation and production techniques, President Min Aung Hlaing also stated. The workshop is scheduled to be held for two days, from September 21 to 22.
