Women Affairs: Services for victims of gender-based violence

Union Minister for Women's Affairs Dr. Daw Thet Thet Zin attended the opening ceremony of the "Training Course on Providing Services for Victims of Gender-Based Violence" in Nay Pyi Taw on September 9. In her opening remarks at the event, the Union Minister stated that domestic violence severely impacts not only individual women, but also their connected communities and society as a whole. She noted that deeply rooted social norms, societal perspectives, and a lack of legal awareness pose obstacles to implementing violence prevention measures. She emphasized that if women, who make up more than half of the nation's population, experience various forms of violence, it will significantly hinder national development. She further highlighted that the Ministry of Women's Affairs systematically handles gender-based violence cases in line with standard case management procedures. She added that trainees will gain a deeper understanding of legal matters, support services for human trafficking victims, basic concepts regarding gender-based violence, and the fundamental principles and procedures required of service providers addressing gender-based violence. The training is being attended by a total of 50 trainees from five ministries and the Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation, and will run for three days from September 9 to 11.
