Cambodia Navigates China Ties and Economic Growth: Seeking Diversification

Cambodia is currently navigating its path amidst two major trends: the promotion of economic development and the deepening of its relationship with China. While substantial investment and infrastructure support from China have been driving economic growth, concerns about excessive economic dependence on China are also rising. As part of the Belt and Road Initiative, China has invested heavily in Cambodia, particularly in infrastructure development such as roads, ports, and power plants. This has contributed to reducing logistics costs and strengthening the industrial base, undeniably fostering economic growth. However, many of these investments have been in the form of loans, leading to concerns about Cambodia's increasing debt burden. In this context, the Cambodian government has identified economic diversification as a crucial agenda item. To avoid the risks of over-reliance on China and to build a more robust and sustainable economic foundation, there are moves to strengthen economic ties with other countries, including Japan, the United States, and the European Union (EU). In particular, the recovery of the tourism sector is key to economic revitalization, and promotional activities to attract Japanese tourists are underway. Furthermore, as a member of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Cambodia is compelled to deepen cooperation with the international community while maintaining a geopolitical balance within the region. Amidst the expansion of China's influence affecting the regional power balance, Cambodia faces the need for a diplomatic strategy to maximize its national interests. For the benefits of economic development to reach all citizens, alongside infrastructure development, strengthening social infrastructure such as education and healthcare, and establishing the rule of law are essential. Efforts in these areas are considered crucial in determining Cambodia's future stability and prosperity.
