ASEAN Stresses Rules-Based Maritime Cooperation for Regional Resilience

ASEAN member states are emphasizing the strengthening of maritime cooperation based on international law to enhance the region's overall resilience and cohesiveness. In terms of cultural exchange, activities involving children and diplomats from member states were held to promote understanding among the younger generation. In the economic sphere, Indonesia aims to bolster its position as an ASEAN business events hub, while Thailand is focusing on nurturing its creative economy by strengthening partnerships with digital platforms. Furthermore, addressing global challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, and energy shortages was identified as an urgent priority. The Vice President of the Lao National Assembly highlighted the significant impact these issues have on livelihoods and sustainable development across the region. Regarding transnational crime prevention, incidents involving criminal networks spanning China, Thailand, and the US have led ASEAN nations to confirm a policy of strengthening immigration controls, intelligence sharing, and law enforcement cooperation to disrupt international criminal organizations and protect citizens. Vietnam reiterated its support for a two-state solution concerning Middle East peace, calling for a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in line with international law and UN resolutions. Economic growth prospects include forecasts for Malaysia's GDP growth and Thailand's export expansion, along with a focus on infrastructure investment such as data centers. The growth of Thailand's street food market and expectations for the wellness industry were also indicated. Within the ASEAN framework, Vietnam is deepening its cooperation with the international community while balancing economic growth and regional collaboration. Its economic development under a one-party system is closely watched in the context of foreign relations and regional security. Relations with China, in particular, present a complex picture, with economic ties being significant despite issues such as the South China Sea dispute.
