Heavy Rain Causes Flooding on Industrial Park Road, Motorcycles Swept Under Cars

Heavy rainfall on the afternoon of July 25 caused localized flooding on an internal road within the Song May Industrial Park in Dong Nai province, Vietnam, leading to a dangerous situation where motorcycles were swept under cars. Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the incident. The downpour, which lasted for over an hour in Binh Minh commune and surrounding areas, resulted in water accumulation on several roads and residential areas. At the Viet-Vinh market area, water from residential zones flowed down the sloped internal road of the Song May Industrial Park. Due to the steep terrain and strong currents, many vehicles struggled to move. Some truck drivers stopped their vehicles mid-road to act as barriers, attempting to help motorcycles pass safely. However, the powerful flow swept several motorcycles under passing cars. Residents from both sides of the road rushed out to assist in rescuing people and their vehicles. Ms. Do Thi Nga, a vendor at the Viet-Vinh market, stated that similar incidents have occurred repeatedly in the area. "The water flows down the slope like a waterfall, so strong that even cars cannot stop it," she said. Beyond the Song May Industrial Park, several residential areas in Trang Dai and Ho Nai wards also experienced flooding due to inadequate drainage, causing difficulties for residents. A section of National Highway 1 near Thong Nhat General Hospital was also temporarily submerged, with some motorcycles being swept away. By evening, the rain subsided, and water levels gradually receded, restoring normal traffic flow. Flooding has been a persistent issue in Dong Nai's urban areas, primarily attributed to drainage infrastructure failing to keep pace with rapid urbanization. Additionally, many drains and streams have been narrowed by mud and debris, exacerbating the problem. In its medium-term public investment plan, Dong Nai province has allocated over VND 1,100 billion (approximately $47 million USD) for 12 drainage projects.
