14.1% of Filipinos Still Use Traditional Family Planning Methods, CPD Says

MANILA, Philippines — Despite the steady rise in the use of modern contraceptives, 14.1 percent of Filipinos still rely on traditional family planning methods such as withdrawal and the calendar method, the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) said Thursday. Mylin Mirasol Quiray, chief of the CPD Information Management and Communications Division, said the share of Filipinos using traditional methods remains a public health concern. While modern contraceptive use, including pills, IUDs, and injectables, has been increasing, reliance on traditional methods persists, particularly in rural areas and among populations with limited access to information. This can contribute to unintended pregnancies and associated maternal and child health issues. The CPD plans to strengthen educational programs and improve access to modern contraceptive methods to address this situation. Family planning is a key national priority for the Philippines, given its impact on economic development and resource allocation.
