Butuan's Water Supply Recovers, But Some Taps Remain Dry

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — The water level at the Taguibo Watershed dam has returned to normal following recent rainfall, boosting Butuan City’s total water supply to at least 60 million liters per day (MLD). However, several residents continued to report dry taps and intermittent water service on Sunday. The Butuan City Water District (BCWD) confirmed that last week's rainfall helped normalize the dam's water level, thereby increasing daily supply capacity. Nevertheless, aging distribution networks and delayed infrastructure upgrades in certain areas are believed to be contributing factors to the continued water supply instability. Despite BCWD's efforts to improve water delivery, areas that are situated at higher elevations or at the end of the distribution lines are still experiencing insufficient water pressure and dry taps. City officials are considering deploying water tankers and strengthening emergency water supply measures to minimize the impact on residents. This issue highlights common infrastructure challenges faced by many urban areas in the Philippines. In numerous instances, the development of water infrastructure has not kept pace with population growth and urbanization driven by economic development. The stable supply of clean water is a critical issue that directly impacts the quality of life, particularly in provincial cities and areas with a high concentration of low-income residents.
