BARMM polls to translate peace gains into democratic mandate, says Marcos aide

MANILA, Philippines — The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is gearing up for its first regular parliamentary elections on September 14, a significant event poised to transform decades of peace efforts into a democratic mandate. Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo highlighted that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. views these elections as the "fruition" of the long-standing peace process. Lagdameo noted the participation of former combatants, who once opposed government forces, as candidates in the electoral race. President Marcos sees this transition from armed struggle to democratic political engagement as crucial for consolidating the gains of the Bangsamoro peace process. The September 14 polls signify a pivotal shift from the BARMM's interim governance to a regular parliamentary government elected through democratic means. This will empower the electorate to exercise their political choice and select leaders who will guide the autonomous region's future. The national government has pledged its full support for the electoral preparations. The Commission on Elections (Comelec), the Bangsamoro government, local government units, and security agencies are collaborating to ensure a peaceful and orderly election. Comelec is actively conducting voter education to familiarize residents with the parliamentary system and electoral procedures. Security forces, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, are working closely with Comelec and other agencies to safeguard voters, candidates, election personnel, and materials. Officials and peace advocates are urging candidates and their supporters to conduct campaigns peacefully and respect voters' rights to make independent choices.
