India to seal Myanmar border to stop drug inflow

India will seal its borders to stop the inflow of drugs from Myanmar and Afghanistan into the country, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday. He further stated that India will be made a drug-free nation within the next three years. India is caught between two drug-producing hubs, and although a fence is being erected along the Myanmar border, the terrain is complex, he said. A three-year roadmap from July 2026 to June 2029 has been prepared for drug eradication, and he himself will conduct field operations in all states, Amit Shah said. He stated that the fight against drugs is one of India's biggest national battles after suppressing Naxalite insurgency. He said that not even a single gram of drugs will be allowed to enter India, nor will it be allowed to go out, and about 100 clandestine drug laboratories will be destroyed. India is working with four strategies to dismantle drug networks: reducing supply, reducing demand, reducing damage, and enhancing capacity. Under this strategy, infiltration from the Golden Triangle route, which includes Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand, and the Crescent Moon route, which includes Afghanistan, will be thwarted. Amit Shah said that over 11.9 million kilograms of drugs worth Rs 1.89 trillion have been seized in 12 years from 2014 to 2026. Illegal assets worth Rs 18.41 billion related to drugs were seized between 2024 and June 2026. More than 100 criminals involved in drug smuggling and absconding abroad have been brought back. Amit Shah said that the Indian government will resolutely fight against drugs for national security and the future of the youth.
