Jeepney Fare Hike Remains Suspended Amid Fuel Price Surge

The Department of Transportation (DoTr) on Thursday said the jeepney fare hike approved in March would remain suspended despite rising fuel prices. Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Z. Lopez said the government is instead providing relief through a fuel discount of P12 per liter for public utility jeepneys and UV Express vehicles starting Aug. 15, which could save eligible drivers P1,800. The DoTr will also use P1.5 billion under the public transportation modernization program for amortization assistance. Toll operators will waive fees for provincial buses on the North Luzon Expressway and South Luzon Expressway starting Aug. 10, while the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange and SM Malls will waive selected terminal fees.
