Domestic fertilizer factories can only produce 3% of the demand

Domestic fertilizer factories can only produce and distribute 3% of Myanmar's total fertilizer demand, according to Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy U Kyaw Naing Win. In response to a starred question from U San Maung, a Member of Parliament for the Bokalay constituency, asking whether there are plans to build a fertilizer factory in Phayapoo District, during the second day of the third regular session of the third Pyidaungsu Hluttaw held on September 22, Deputy Minister U Kyaw Naing Win stated this. Although there are five fertilizer factories under the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, due to the natural gas supply situation, only Factory No. 4 (Myawtaw) and Factory No. 5 (Kan Gyi Htawnt) are currently operational, and these two factories together produce and distribute approximately 10,000 tons of urea fertilizer per month. The resumption of suspended fertilizer factories and the construction of new fertilizer factories depend on the production of natural gas and the development of natural gas pipelines. Currently, the produced natural gas is mainly used for electricity generation and transportation sectors. Therefore, if natural gas production increases and natural gas pipelines are expanded, new fertilizer factories can be built to meet market demand, Deputy Minister U Kyaw Naing Win replied. U San Maung, the Member of Parliament for the Bokalay constituency who asked the question, added that the price of urea fertilizer distributed to farmers from domestic factories is only about 45,000 kyats per bag, while imported fertilizer costs about 120,000 kyats per bag. Therefore, if more domestic fertilizer can be distributed, it would be more beneficial for the farmers.
