EGAT to Repurpose Expired EV Batteries for BESS, Driving Green Energy and Circular Economy

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is poised to launch a new initiative focused on the effective utilization of used electric vehicle (EV) batteries, which are expected to increase with the growing adoption of EVs. MGR Online (Business) reports that EGAT plans to repurpose expired EV batteries into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This project aims to contribute to the establishment of a sustainable energy supply system through "green batteries." By giving new value to used batteries through energy storage, rather than simply disposing of them, EGAT seeks to reduce environmental impact and maximize resource utilization. This aligns with Thailand's push for a Circular Economy. Furthermore, EGAT is considering collaboration with related agencies, such as the Office of the National Energy Policy Council (ONC), to accelerate this initiative. This could lead to the creation of a comprehensive framework for EV battery collection, recycling, and reuse, potentially fostering new industrial clusters. EV adoption is progressing in Thailand, and the issue of battery waste has been recognized as a future challenge.
