Benilde Recognized by International Body for SDG Metrics

MANILA, Philippines — De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) has been recognized internationally for its efforts across all 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings. Established in 2004, THE provides trusted performance data on universities and colleges worldwide to serve as a resource on the different missions of higher educational institutions (HEIs). The THE Sustainability Impact Ratings is the only global performance assessment that evaluates universities and colleges according to the UN’s 17 SDGs, measuring their successes in making a societal and environmental impact. Carefully calibrated indicators are tapped for comprehensive and balanced comparisons on sustainability across the key pillars of education, research, stewardship, and outreach. The 17 SDGs include no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, and industry, innovation and infrastructure. Completing the line-up are reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice and strong institutions, and partnerships for goals. THE evaluates over 1,600 universities and colleges worldwide, and Benilde was named as one of the 27 HEIs from the National Capital Region (NCR) recognized in the organization’s rating system. By pursuing a highly collaborative, top-down and bottom-up approach that mobilized key leadership from the Operations Council and Academic Council, Benilde was able to expand its impact from six key areas in 2025 to all 17 SDGs in 2026. Marga Clarence Bolalin, DTHM, CGSP, Benilde Center for Quality Management and Accreditation head, explained that by activating two core pillars, the college was able to seamlessly integrate the SDG targets into both campus operations and academic curricula, demonstrating institution-wide commitment. “This achievement is a direct validation of Benilde’s core identity as an inclusive and innovative institution,” she said. “This recognition has enabled us to view sustainability metrics as internal catalysts for our institutional development,” she added. “Specifically, it has institutionalized data-driven accountability and fostered strategic, inclusive planning.” The international recognition of a Philippine higher education institution for its SDG achievements carries significant weight, highlighting increased awareness in the domestic education sector and contributions to global goal achievement. This suggests that the Philippines is strengthening its efforts toward realizing a sustainable future as a responsible member of the international community.
