This initiative aims to attract participation in new drug research and development, as well as investment in pharmaceutical manufacturing within Thailand. Dr. Ekkapop Pianpises, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, announced successful negotiations with two major global pharmaceutical giants, MSD and Roche. Further discussions are planned with Sandoz and dozens of other companies. This aligns with the government's plan to transition Thailand from a contract manufacturing nation to a partner in the development and production of high-value technology products. This endeavor by the Ministry of Public Health marks a pivotal shift for Thailand, moving from being a mere purchaser of medicines to a collaborator in research, development, and production. It involves attracting domestic investment for R&D. Dr. Ekkapop further disclosed that initial discussions with Roche indicated an investment of 15 billion baht in pharmaceutical R&D within Thailand. When combined with potential investments from other companies currently under negotiation, the total R&D funding entering the country could reach up to 1 trillion baht. As a partner in drug development, Thailand's universal healthcare system is expected to gain access to new medicines for treating diseases, particularly complex conditions, at reduced costs. The negotiations with pharmaceutical companies also encompass plans for establishing pharmaceutical manufacturing bases in Thailand. This strategic move to create an economic future for Thailand in the public health sector not only promises improved access to new medicines at lower prices for Thai citizens through various healthcare insurance schemes but also presents future opportunities for employment in fields related to research and pharmaceutical production.
