Vietnam's Functional Food Fraud Case Exposes Systemic Loopholes, Calls for Harsher Penalties

In a large-scale functional food fraud case uncovered in Vietnam, the Hanoi People's Court has imposed strict penalties on 14 defendants. This trial has not only punished the criminals but also exposed systemic loopholes in the regulatory and management systems for functional foods, as well as in corporate accounting. The court has sought a maximum sentence of 18 years in prison for the ringleader of the organization involved in the production and sale of counterfeit functional foods. This case illustrates how malicious acts threatening consumer health were carried out by an extensive network. This verdict is also significant in the context of Vietnam's pursuit of becoming a "state of law" under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The party emphasizes the improvement of the legal system and the strengthening of enforcement capabilities alongside the development of a socialist-oriented market economy, and the handling of such large-scale fraud cases presents an opportunity to demonstrate that commitment. In recent years, with economic growth, Vietnam has seen an expansion of its middle class and a surge in the functional food market driven by increasing health consciousness. However, the current reality is that systemic management has not kept pace with this rapid growth. This case suggests that urgent measures are needed from the perspectives of product quality control, ensuring transparency in distribution channels, and consumer protection. The government is expected to strengthen regulations concerning functional foods and further tighten penalties for fraudulent activities. These measures are essential for the healthy development of the domestic market and for safeguarding public health.
