Cambodia Ministry of Labor Engages in Minimum Wage Talks, Emphasizing Data-Driven Criteria for Fair Wages and Business Sustainability

The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training is paying close attention to the concerns and requests of workers-employees, trade unions, and all relevant parties regarding the minimum wage for 2027, emphasizing that negotiations must be based on data and seven criteria through a tripartite mechanism. Sun Mesa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, stated on September 10, 2026, that wage determination must have a clear data basis, considering workers' needs, the economic situation, and practical implementation capabilities. He added, "The Ministry understands the concerns of our workers. All requests from our brothers, unions, and all parties deserve to be heard and considered with attention, as the main goal of the government is to help our workers improve their livelihoods, have stable jobs, and promote the expansion of factories and enterprises to increase employment opportunities for the people." The spokesperson affirmed that negotiations must proceed in accordance with the law, with the participation of representatives of workers-employees, employers, and the government. Joint consideration of social and economic factors will help ensure that decisions are well-founded, aiming to guarantee fair wages while maintaining job stability and the sustainable growth of enterprises. Sun Mesa further stated that the annual minimum wage discussions reflect the government's attention to the livelihoods of workers and the situation in the garment, footwear, travel goods, and bag manufacturing sectors. This process provides an opportunity for stakeholders to raise concerns, make requests, and address challenges, as well as to assess Cambodia's competitiveness. In addition to considering wages, the government continues to support workers and their families through social protection schemes, skills training, and measures to alleviate expenditure burdens, contributing to the improvement of workers' livelihoods and well-being.
