DOH Has Enough Leptospirosis Medicines, Mercado Assures

MANILA, Philippines – Acting Health Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said on Wednesday that the agency has sufficient stocks of leptospirosis medicine to meet demand, if needed, to address the flood-borne illness. At a congressional budget hearing, Vergeire said the Department of Health (DOH) has around 3.1 million pills stored at its main warehouse that could be distributed if necessary. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease transmitted through contact with contaminated water or soil, posing an increased risk in areas affected by flooding. Given the frequent occurrence of floods in the Philippines, particularly during the rainy and typhoon seasons, it remains a significant public health concern. The DOH outlined its commitment to continuously monitor medication inventory and procure additional supplies as needed. The agency also emphasized public awareness campaigns on hygiene practices post-flooding and measures to mitigate infection risks. This assurance from the DOH is part of the government's ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and enhance healthcare preparedness, especially during disaster situations.
