Riau Police Uncover Fake SIM Syndicate, Over 500 Issued Across Sumatra

The Riau Regional Police have uncovered a syndicate involved in the forgery and distribution of driving licenses (SIMs). The network operated not only in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province, but also in various regions across Sumatra, with an estimated 500 fake SIMs manufactured and circulated. Kombes Jeki Rahmat Mustika, Director of Traffic for the Riau Regional Police, stated in a press conference on Thursday (17/9/2026) that the perpetrators offered SIM forgery services through social media. They created a sophisticated application designed to mimic official apps, deceiving potential users. This scheme allowed individuals to obtain SIMs simply by paying a fee, bypassing the required theoretical and practical tests. The syndicate would then deliver the forged SIMs directly to the buyers or arrange for pick-up at designated locations. In connection with this case, the police have arrested eight suspects, each with distinct roles, including soliciting clients via social media, manufacturing the fake SIMs, and supplying materials and equipment. Seized evidence includes printers, computer CPUs, casings, and various other tools and materials used for printing counterfeit SIMs. Kombes Jeki urged the public not to fall for offers of SIMs obtained through unofficial channels, emphasizing that SIMs are exclusively issued by the National Police after successful completion of official procedures, including theoretical and practical exams. He advised individuals who may have acquired SIMs through such illicit means to verify their validity with the nearest Satpas (SIM service unit) or Traffic Directorate.
