Marcos, Jr. on Wednesday pledged sustained funding for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) as the government accelerates efforts to boost the country’s territorial defense amid an increasingly challenging regional security environment. The modernization program includes the planned acquisition of long-range patrol aircraft, more Black Hawk and Bell 412 EPX helicopters, advanced surveillance radar systems and flight simulators to improve maritime surveillance, territorial defense and operational readiness. “Modern challenges grow increasingly complex, requiring sustained investments in your capabilities so that you can perform your duties more safely and more effectively,” Mr. Marcos said during the PAF’s 79th anniversary celebration at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City. PAF Commanding General Arthur M. Cordura said the service is focused on enhancing deterrence and area-denial capabilities while expanding its operational reach through the development of air bases in strategic locations, including Pag-asa Island in the South China Sea and Santa Ana, Cagayan province, near the country’s northern sea lanes. “As modern warfare evolves and new dimensions of air power emerge, there is a need for greater adaptability, interoperability, integration and optimal use of capabilities,” Mr. Cordura said.
