Phnom Penh Administration Issues Guidelines for Traditional Religious Festivals

The Phnom Penh City Administration has announced guidelines for the organization of the traditional Buddhist festivals of Kandabinh, Chhngabinh, and Kathina in 2026. Kandabinh and Chhngabinh are highly significant traditional festivals for Cambodian Buddhists, celebrated annually. Their purpose is to offer merit to deceased parents and benefactors, expressing gratitude and remembrance. These occasions also serve as opportunities for families and relatives living in different areas to reunite, share their well-being, and strengthen their bonds. This year, Kandabinh and Chhngabinh will take place from September 27 to October 11, 2026 (Buddhist Era 2570). The Kathina ceremony is a precious ritual in Buddhism, occurring only once a year and lasting for 29 days. Each pagoda receives one Kathina offering, which is a highly meritorious act for donors and recipients. This year's Kathina ceremony will be held from October 27 to November 24, 2026 (Buddhist Era 2570). The guidelines are based on the city administration's recommendation plan No. 10/2026. These festivals play a central role in Cambodian culture and religious traditions, and the authorities are demonstrating their commitment to facilitating their smooth execution.
