US government reiterates call for immediate release of leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The US government has once again called for the immediate and unconditional release of all those unjustly detained, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate and leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as announced today, August 7, by the US Embassy in Myanmar. The embassy welcomed the visit of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, stating it could be a step towards regular humanitarian visits. Furthermore, the US Embassy's statement indicated that authorities need to ensure Daw Aung San Suu Kyi receives the necessary medical care and that family members and relevant organizations are allowed to visit her. The US government also urged the military to hold discussions with all relevant organizations to end the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, according to the embassy's statement. The interim government has ignored international demands, including the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus and the release of unjustly detained individuals, and has only allowed visits with the ICRC, an organization concerned with prisoners.
