TSD Data Breach Prompts SEC to Bolster Oversight
Thailand Securities Depository (TSD) has reported an unauthorized access incident on its Investor Portal, leading to the exposure of some user personal information. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is coordinating with TSD to investigate the root cause and ensure preventive measures are implemented.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is intensifying its oversight of the Thailand Securities Depository Co (TSD) following a personal data breach detected on its Investor Portal. Anek Yooyuen, deputy secretary-general and spokesman for the SEC, stated that TSD reported unauthorized access to its Investor Portal system on July 26. The SEC has since coordinated with TSD to ascertain the facts, identify the root cause, and ensure the implementation of appropriate measures to prevent further impact. TSD confirmed that it has blocked access from suspicious sources and user accounts, disabled affected system connections, and enhanced cybersecurity monitoring as part of its containment efforts. The company acknowledged that some users' personal information was exposed but stressed that securities trading, financial information, and investor assets under its custody remain unaffected. Trading and settlement operations continue to function normally. The incident underscores the growing imperative for robust cybersecurity across Thailand's financial market infrastructure as more investor services migrate online. TSD has upgraded its cybersecurity monitoring framework and is conducting continuous risk assessments for abnormal activity, while collaborating with the SEC on the investigation into the unauthorized access. The SEC emphasized its commitment to working with TSD to ensure corrective actions are taken and any remaining vulnerabilities are addressed to minimize the risk of similar incidents. The regulator cautioned that exposed personal data could be exploited for phishing and social engineering scams, urging investors to be vigilant against suspicious communications and to avoid clicking on dubious links or disclosing sensitive credentials. TSD recommended that users of its Investor Portal regularly change their passwords and review the security of other online accounts using similar login details. As an added precaution, the company has sent notification emails to potentially affected users, advising them to remain alert for suspicious communications. Protecting investor information is a regulatory priority for the SEC, which will continue monitoring TSD's response until the investigation is complete and safeguards are fully operational. Mr. Anek highlighted that the collaboration aims not only to understand the breach but also to bolster preventive measures against future occurrences. Investors are advised to follow TSD's announcements or contact its call center for further information. The SEC also encourages the public to report suspicious activities or potential fraud through its designated channels. This coordinated response seeks to reinforce confidence in Thailand's capital market infrastructure and enhance investor data protection against evolving cyber threats.
